Cryptographic DID identity, libp2p direct encrypted messaging, and local AI intelligence. Zero central servers, zero cloud surveillance, zero telemetry.
Modern messengers demand your phone number, store your chats in corporate clouds, and read your metadata. Online changes the rules completely.
No phone numbers. No SMS verifications. No email addresses. Your identity is a 12-word cryptographic BIP-39 seed phrase generating an immutable W3C did:key:z6Mku... address.
Messages flow directly between devices using the libp2p protocol and Kademlia DHT. End-to-end encryption with perfect forward secrecy guarantees that only recipient keys can decrypt conversations.
Converse with local offline LLMs (Ollama, LM Studio, vLLM) directly on your device with 0 data leaks, or proxy to high-end frontier models (DeepSeek, Claude, Gemini, OpenRouter) with client-side key storage.
Entropy is generated on your CPU using cryptographically secure random number generators (CSPRNG), deriving a 12-word mnemonic and Ed25519 digital signature keypair.
Diffie-Hellman key exchange provides forward secrecy and post-compromise security. Compromising a single temporary session key never exposes past or future communications.
Your chat logs, media metadata, and contact lists live strictly inside an encrypted SQLite database (online.db). Mnemonic seeds are guarded by OS Keychain, Secret Service, or Windows Credential Manager.
Compare the fundamental trust assumptions of Online with mainstream messaging applications.

Because Online is 100% self-custodial and decentralized with zero centralized servers, there is no “forgot password” or administrator reset. Your 12-word BIP-39 seed phrase is the ONLY master key to your identity and messages. Store it in a secure password manager or offline on paper.
No. Messages are encrypted end-to-end using X25519 and Ed25519 keys stored exclusively in your local device OS Keyring. The traffic is relayed peer-to-peer over libp2p. Neither developers nor internet providers have the mathematical capability to decrypt your conversations.
When you run local offline models via Ollama or LM Studio, 100% of the inference happens on your local GPU/CPU with zero internet transmission. When you opt to use cloud providers (DeepSeek, Claude, Gemini), requests are sent strictly with your private user-configured API key directly from Rust without any intermediary telemetry.
Online includes a native in-app updater that detects new releases on GitHub. On Fedora, you can update with a single click inside Settings, or download the latest .rpm and run sudo dnf upgrade ./online.rpm.
